Founder's Philosophy
"Freedom House is my fulfilled dream to offer safe haven to all women and their dependents.Quiet comfort from chaos, violence, fear and threats is now a reality for anyone who seeks it."
-Nedda Simon, Freedom House Founder, on the shelter's opening, May 9, 1983
Back in the early 80s, the nearest shelters for battered women in our area were foundin Peoria, Streator and the Quad Cities. Finding this unacceptable, Princeton residentand community mental health counselor, Nedda Simon pioneered the effort to organizeand open Freedom House. First situated in Wyanet and later at 314 N. Euclid Ave.,Princeton, the current domestic and sexual violence service center is located at 440 Elm Place, Princeton.
